The distinguished members of this board are leaders and innovators in their fields of cancer diagnosis and treatment. They bring expertise from the fields of pathology, medical oncology, surgical oncology and health care administration and policy.
Juan Rosai, M.D.
Dr. Juan Rosai is an internationally acclaimed expert and consultant in surgical pathology. He was recently appointed Chairman, Department of Pathology, National Cancer Institute, Milan,
Italy. He is concurrently Professor of Pathology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City. From 1991 to 1999, Dr. Rosai held the position of James Ewing Alumni Professor and Chairman, Department of Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Previously, he served as Professor of Pathology and Director of Anatomic Pathology at the Yale University School of Medicine.
Dr. Rosai received the M.D. degree from the University of Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina. His pathology residency and fellowship training was completed at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Rosai holds membership in over 20 academic pathology societies. He is Editor-in-Chief of the AFIP Atlas of Tumor Pathology, Third Series, a prestigious set of publications covering all aspects of the pathology of tumors. Dr. Rosai is Editor-in-Chief of The International Journal of Surgical Pathology. In addition, he serves on the editorial boards of more than 15 pathology journals from around the world. Ackerman's Surgical Pathology, a classic textbook in pathology now in its 8th Edition, is authored by Juan Rosai. He has published extensively on a broad spectrum of topics in Pathology. This is evidenced by his publication of over 40 books and book chapters as well as more than 250 original articles. Dr. Rosai is the recipient of numerous honors and awards. Recently he was the Maude Abbott Lecturer at the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. Dr. Rosai has been awarded Doctor Honoris Causa degrees from the University of Santiago (Spain), University of Bologna (Italy) and the University of Cordoba (Argentina). He serves as a Scientific Consultant for Impath Laboratories, New York, New York.
Florabel G. Mullick, M.D., SES
Dr. Florabel Mullick brings her expertise as a nationally prominent pathologist and a distinguished physician executive to the Medical Advisory
Board. She serves as Principal Deputy Director, Armed Forces Institute of
Pathology as well as Director of the Institute's Center for Advanced Pathology. Dr. Mullick is Director of the Environmental Pathology and Toxicology Center and has developed an international computer database of both human and animal lesions resulting from toxic drugs and chemicals. She has been appointed Adjunct Professor of Pathology, Georgetown University Hospital; Consultant in Pathology, Oncologic Hospital, University of Puerto Rico Medical Center; Professor of Pathology, University of Puerto Rico; and Professor of Pathology, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. Since 1994 Dr. Mullick has served as Secretary of the International Academy of Pathology.
Dr. Mullick received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the School of Medicine, Puerto Rico. Her pathology training includes the University Hospital of the Puerto Rico Medical Center, Children's Hospital, Washington, D.C. and Georgetown University. Dr. Mullick is a distinguished graduate of the Senior Executive Course at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She is a member of ten professional societies. Dr. Mullick has been appointed to the editorial boards of four pathology journals. She has authored or co-authored over 75 book chapters and original articles. She has been recognized as Meritorious Executive and Distinguished Executive in the federal Senior Executive Service. Dr. Mullick was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science Degree from Metropolitan University, AGMUS, Puerto Rico.
Paul H. Sugarbaker, M.D., FACS, FRCS
Dr. Paul Sugarbaker is an internationally recognized oncologic surgeon with expertise in gastrointestinal cancers, liver tumors, mesothelioma and soft tissue sarcomas. Currently, he is
Director of Surgical Oncology at the Washington Cancer Institute of The Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C. From 1986-89 he was Director of Surgical Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. From 1976 to 1986 Dr. Sugarbaker was at the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland where he was a senior investigator in the Surgery Branch as well as Head of the Colorectal Cancer Section.
After graduating from Cornell University Medical College, he spent 9 years in surgical training, that included internship, residency, fellowship and basic surgery research at the Massachusetts General and Peter Bent Brigham Hospitals in Boston.. He earned an M.A. degree in Immunology from Harvard University in 1983. Dr. Sugarbaker is a member of numerous academic societies that include the American College of Surgeons, Association for Academic Surgery, American Association of Cancer Research and the International Society of Regional Cancer Therapy, of which he is a founding member. He has appointments on numerous editorial boards that include Journal of Hepato Pancreatico Biliary Surgery, European Journal of Surgical Oncology and the International Journal of Surgical Sciences. Dr. Sugarbaker has authored over 500 scientific articles and chapters. He has developed numerous video presentations demonstrating various surgical techniques. As a recipient of numerous distinguished awards, he has delivered the "Burchenal Lecture" at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and received the E.T. Krementz Award for Best Research Development, in Ulm, Germany. In 1999, Dr. Sugarbaker was awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Liege, Belgium.
Robert J. Jacobson, M.B., B.Ch., F.A.C.P., F.R.C.P. (C)
Dr. Robert Jacobson brings his expertise as a nationally prominent medical oncologist to our Medical Advisory Board. Dr. Jacobson is Medical Director of The Helen and Harry Gray Cancer
Institute, Good Samaritan Medical Center, West Palm Beach, Florida. He is also Director of the Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplantation Program at the same institution. In addition, he serves as Consulting Professor, Department of Medicine, Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Previously, Dr. Jacobson held several academic positions at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C. He was Professor of Medicine and Pathology as well as Co-Director of the Hematologic Oncology Service at the Vincent T. Lombardi Cancer Center. Also, he served as Interim Chairman of the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Jacobson was awarded the medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand Medical School, Johannesburg, South Africa. Internal Medicine residency was done at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. He then served as a Fellow in Hematology/Oncology at Georgetown University Hospital. He belongs to numerous academic societies including the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Dr. Jacobson has published more than 10 chapters and 70 original articles related to hematology and cancer issues.
